A MEMENTO: A Stubborn Rebel
It was near sundown April 6, 1865 at Sailor's Creek, Va.... Riding along far in the rear, where the rebel line had been... I put spurs to my mare... Here I was joined by two boys from another regiment. We saw a rebel running some 300 or 400 yards distant toward the rear. I was best mounted. I told the boys I would bring that fellow in. I yelled at him to halt. He glanced over his left shoulder at me. Then he made an extra spurt, evidently hoping to reach a cedar thicket some 50 yards distant. I snatched up my carbine and fired, over his head, feeling sure that that would stop him. When I was right on him he turned to shoot me or my horse, but he was an instant too late; I was on his right side. Still he was running. I heard the voices of the boys: "Shoot him if he won't surrender!" I was angry at his attempt to shoot me and raised by carbine. I aimed below his shoulder blade and pulled the trigger, but I had failed to pump up another load, and he was not killed. I knew I was no match for him in a struggle, so I brought my carbine down on his head. But even then he staggered toward the cedars, and I was forced to catch his coat with my left hand and lead him back over two fields to the provost guard. He said: "You'uns amost killed me."
